JoLissa has always known that she wanted to help people. Born and raised in Los Angeles, California, she decided at a young age that she wanted to be a doctor so that she could save lives and help those who couldn't help themselves. To achieve that goal, she attended Howard University, where she studied biology and chemistry but soon realized that practicing medicine wasn't for her. If she practiced law, she could do more. After graduating from Howard in 2010, JoLissa attended Thurgood Marshall School of Law (TMSL) at Texas Southern University. While at TMSL, JoLissa helped other students as a tutor, was an editor of the school's Law Review, became a published author, and served the community as a student attorney in TMSL's criminal defense clinic. While working in the clinic, JoLissa interned for attorney Monique Sparks. After graduating summa cum laude in 2018, Monique offered JoLissa a position as the first associate attorney hired at The Sparks Law Firm. JoLissa is passionate about fighting for her clients and changing the current criminal justice system. She has worked or assisted in cases ranging from DWI to murder and has recently expanded her practice into appellate work. In December 2020, JoLissa was nominated and selected to serve on the board of directors of The Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association (TCDLA). She will fight to make sure every person in Texas has competent and effective assistance from counsel. Often you will find her writing briefs or watching body camera footage. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her dog, Kobe, playing her clarinet, or watching Jeopardy!
